Karachi witnessed one of the most shocking incidents in its recent history when a simple Zakat distribution drive among employees turned into a deadly stampede.

At least 12 people were killed in the accident that took place at Naurus Chowrangi in the factory-lined SITE.

Initial findings of the ongoing investigation revealed that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the factory owners, who didn’t follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Speaking to the media, SSP Dr Hafeez revealed that eight people have been arrested so far in the case.

“After letting people in from the main gate, they closed the inner gate,” he said. “The distance between them is 70 to 80 feet and in the middle, there is a narrow slope.”

A large number of people gathered outside the factory and when the gate was opened they rushed inside, causing a stampede.

“Those who came from behind ran over the children and elderly people who were already inside the factory,” he said.

Moreover, he said that the water line was also broken during this chaos, however, there was no evidence of current found in the water.

Every person was to receive Rs2,000 (around $7) from the Zakat money, eyewitnesses told Aaj News.

Eight women and three children are among the dead, rescue teams said. Bodies of two women were sent to Mirpur Mathelo, while the funeral prayers of the deceased will be offered today (Saturday).
