When Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan reaches the age of retirement on March 30, something unique will happen.

The new Chief Justice Rooh-ul-Amin Khan will be sworn in the next day as per usual procedure, but he will only be in office for one day.

Justice Rooh-ul-Amin Khan will reach the age of 62, superannuation age for high court judges in Pakistan, on April 1, just one day after he reaches the highest position in the court.

He has been serving as a permanent judge of the Peshawar High Court since 2014.

Although he penned hundreds of judgements in his eight-year career, there is one anecdote that particularly made headlines.

In 2020, he was part of the bench that decided a case regarding remarks by PTI leaders against a judge of the court who had already died. So Justice Rooh-ul-Amin told Fawad Chaudhry and Firdous Ashiq Awan should visit the deceased judge’s grave and tender their apoology.

When he retires, the Peshawar High Court will get its first ever female chief justice when Justice Musarrat Hilali is elevated to the position.
