NASA’s new cup helps astronaut enjoy cappuccino in zero-gravity

The ground breaking invention will potentially help reduce the volume and weight of drinking bags that need to be sent to space

Have you ever wondered how difficult the life is in the outer space? You may somehow manage to find a way to eat, but it is immensely difficult to drink in a zero-gravity environment.

NASA came up with a smart solution to tackle this issue, as astronaut Nicole Mann demonstrated “capillary action” to drink a hot cappuccino while on the International Space Station.

The special cup functions just like cups here on Earth, however, instead of relying on gravity, it uses a combination of surface tension, wetting and cup geometry to keep the liquids in place.

It allows astronauts to drink a variety of liquids while they are in space.

It is worth mentioning here that in a near zero-gravity environment, liquids behave very differently. The lack of gravity causes them to float around in blobs, which make them very difficult to handle.
