PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz returned to Lahore in the wee hours of Tuesday after three months of staying abroad. His arrival comes at a time when the party has been running campaigns for Punjab elections set to take place on April 30.

He arrived in Lahore from Doha, sources told Aaj News. He was accompanied by Energy Minister and party leader Khurram Dastgir. He left for Model Town under tight security.

Hamza, the son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, left for the United States last year after some media report said that he had concerns with some of the developments within the party. Later, he was off to London where he met with family members and party supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Sources said that Hamza would “actively” take part in the election campaigns, which are being led by Maryam Nawaz, and parliamentary board meetings. He would also submit his nomination papers to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz, who is also N-league president, appointed Maryam as senior vice president and chief organiser in January. The decision was made after the party had suffered a major blow in the no-trust vote against the-then chief minister Pervez Elahi in the Punjab assembly.

But many party leaders, including Hamza, “are not happy” with the decision.

Though Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has denied his concern over the appointment, the media reported that he did not endorse the decision. But he has not left the party.

“I am not aware of any such thing. Yes obviously I am with the party [PML-N] and will leave for home from here,” Abbasi Shahzaib Khanzada on Geo News on January 19. Next month, he confirmed that he had resigned as the party’s senior vice president in an effort to give Chief Organiser Maryam an “open field”.

Abbasi, with another leader Miftah Ismail, has been conducting seminars titled “Reimagining Pakistan” in different cities on the current challenges. They are also joined by another leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, who parted ways with the Pakistan Peoples Party, and senior politician from Balochistan Lashkari Raisani.

Both of them have rejected reports that they have left the party.

But they have been sceptical of the PM Shehbaz Sharif-led government policies. Miftah has openly criticised the way his predecessor Ishaq Dar has been dealing with the International Monetary Fund while Abbasi has many times called for taking “tough decisions” and a “greater dialogue” to steer the country out of the crisis.
