A Sikh magistrate in Maharashtra has ordered a Muslim man to pray five times a day for three weeks and plant two trees for injuring a person in a street fight.

Magistrate Tejwant Singh Sindhu announced the verdict after applying Section 3 of the Probation of Offenders Act.

The act empowered the magistrate to release a convict after admonition or appropriate warning to ensure he or she does not repeat the offense.

The court in its order said that the offense was committed near the Sonapura Mosque premises, so it would be appropriate for Rauf Umar Khan to plant the trees there and care for them. Also, since he had admitted he is a devoted Muslim but was unable to find time for prayers, offering a five-time Nawaz for 21 would be appropriate.

The incident happened in 2010. He was booked under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (causing grievous hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. But he was released on all charges other than Section 323.
