“It takes a particular kind of genius to be able to roast Pakistan’s rulers in a four-minute rap that tumbles helter-skelter through 60 years of history and leave you in splits. This was the genius of Wasu Khan, a Baloch folk singer, who died last week.

“Wasu Khan was unable to read and write, but had great political intellect and wrote political satire,” singer Shehzad Roy said while updating the world about the passing.

Wasu’s viral video for the song Apney Ulloo is shot in a courtroom with Wasu wearing a white turban and blue shalwar kameez.

Later, the folk singer became the star of Shehzad’s show Wasu aur mein.

Wasu Khan Gajani passed away on Friday in Sukkur after suffering from respiratory disease, the family said. He was 65. He was laid to rest in his native village Rustam Gajani, Sohbatpur. The funeral prayers were attended by political and social figures of the area and members of the tribe.

His name at birth was Mohammad Waris but he became popular as Wasu as he performed.

Though he featured in other songs with Shehzad, it was the innocent rap that catapaulted him to social media endearment. Here is a snippet:

Wasu woudl say he had dreams and the next morning he rendered them into song. He just articulated what his thoughts were.

He was vocal about the issues of Balochistan. For him, access to basic facilities in the resource-rich but neglected province was a main concern.

“The song was well made. People also liked it. I did not like it because people will get disheartened after listening to it,” Wasu said at the end of an episode of the show Wasu aur Mein. “This time, from 1947 to 2011, there is only darkness, [I] can’t see any light. People will think everything is bad in Pakistan. Thank you. Forgive me. Khuda Hafiz.”
