Pakistan Defense Minister, ISI-Chief land in Kabul
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt General Nadeem Anjum are currently visiting Kabul where they have met with Taliban leader Abdul Ghani Bradar
Pakistan’s foreign ministry confirmed the visit in a statement issued Wednesday.
“A high-ranking delegation led by the Minister for Defence is in Kabul today to meet with officials of the Afghan Interim Government to discuss security related matters including counter terrorism measures,” the statement said.
A press release issued from Ghani’s office indicated that Afghan officials insisted on separating trade and finance from political and security issues.
Baradar also pressed for the release of Afghan nationals being held in Pakistani jails.
He also discussed issued related to Torkham and Chaman border crossings.
The visit comes amid rising terror attacks in Pakistan and growing border tension. Earlier this week, Afghan officials closed the border when Pakistan denied entry to an Afghan man seeking medical treatment in Pakistan.
Thousands of trucks remain stranded on the border, though after the meeting between the Pakistani delegation and Baradar, officials were expected to reopen the border crossing.
