President Arif Alvi has written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja inviting him for consultations to organise elections in the country.

President Alvi has invited the CEC to come to the President House on February 20 to discuss elections.

The president wrote that he hopes to announce the schedule for elections as per section 57(1) of the election act after the discussion.

A tweet from the president also said that he had expressed his displeasure at the fact that the ECP had not responded to an earlier letter on the same subject.

The president had also mentioned the recent verdict of the Lahore High Court asking elections to be announced immediately. He has also mentioned the recent remarks made in the Supreme Court regarding the delay in elections.

He added that the CEC had been invited for the consultation in keeping with his responsibility to safeguard the constitution.

Provincial assemblies in Punjab and KP wer dissolved in January. However, election schedules have still not been announced despite the constitution mandating that they be held within 90 days.
