Renowned actor, orator, and director Zia Mohyeddin passed away in Karachi early morning on Monday. He was 91 years old.

Mohyeddin was laid to rest in Defence Phase VIII Graveyard Karachi.

He was critically ill and on life support at a hospital in the city.

His funeral prayers were offered after Zuhr at Imambargah Yasrab in Karachi’s Defense Phase IV. A large number of people attended the funeral.

After the funeral prayers, family and close relatives departed for the Phase VIII Graveyard with the body, Aaj News reported.

Mohyeddin was born on June 20, 1931. He appeared on both Pakistani cinema and television as well as on British cinema and television throughout his career.

History will also remember him as the greatest orator in Pakistan.

Zia Mohyeddin, whose name is often misspelled as Zia Mohiuddin, was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest civilian honor in the country, in 2012.

People have taken to Twitter to share their fond memories of Mohyeddin.

A video clip is being shared and reshared showing him recite Noon Meem Rashid’s poem “zindagi se darte ho” at Jashan-e-Rekhta.

Politicians offer condolences

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed his sorrow over the loss of the renowned artist and said that Zia Mohyeddin himself was a work of art. He added that his unique style made him a sensation all over the world including Pakistan, it is sad that a man with many beautiful qualities has passed away.

The Prime Minister said that he pays tribute to his abilities and services, may Allah raise the ranks of the deceased and grant patience to the bereaved.

Sindh’s Minister of Labour, Saeed Ghani, expressed his condolences and said that the country has lost a great artist today.

“Zia was the uncrowned king of his field,” Ghani said in a tweet.

He said that Zia Mohiuddin was not only an artist, but he was also a true Pakistani who was always involved in the welfare of his country.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Marriyum Aurangzeb, expressed her grief and sorrow over the death of the director and host Zia Mohyeddin. She said he was a literary figure whose style of reading and speaking gained fame worldwide.

Provincial Minister of Sindh for Local Governments, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, expressed his grief and said that Zia Mohyeddin’s services in the field of artistry will always be remembered.

Sindh Governor, Kamran Khan Tessori, expressed his condolences and said that the charm of Zia’s voice will always remain.

Praising Zia’s services to Urdu language, theater, and film, MQM leader, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that Zia Mohyeddin was considered a shining beacon of Urdu literature in the modern era.

“In terms of Urdu pronunciation and acting, Zia Mohyeddin had the status of a teacher for famous actors,” he said.

Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, expressed deep sorrow over the famous actor’s death and said that Zia Mohyeddin was an institution in the world of art, literature, and knowledge.
