Babar Azam wins ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award
If you are wondering, Babar Azam had an amazing ODI outing in 2021, then wait for a second, he has an even better run in the 50-over format in 2022.
After securing a place as captain in the ICC ODI Team of the Year, the Pakistan superstar also won the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award on Thursday.
He became only the fourth player ever to achieve the feat for a second year in a row. MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli are the other three cricketers to win the ICC ODI trophy.
It might be surprising to note that he only played nine ODI matches in 2022, but his form with the bat was unmatched by any other cricketer last year.
The world number one ODI batter scored eight scores of more than fifty, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the year with 679 runs at a stunning average of 84.87.
Moreover, it was also a memorable year for Babar as captain, where he won three ODI series out of three.
Pakistan were unstoppable in the format, losing just one match (against Australia) out of nine. His leadership skills means that he leads the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2022.
Earlier, the 28-year-old was named captain of the ICC ODI Team of the year.
The team of the year recognises 11 outstanding individuals who have impressed one and all – be it with the bat, the ball, or their all-round exploits in a calendar year.
