ECP issues notice to Imran for staying on as party chief despite disqualification

Notice cites its October verdict and top court's 2018 ruling on the issue

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a notice to Chairman PTI Imran Khan over remaining party chief despite his disqualification and summoned the former prime minister or his lawyer at 10am on January 11.

In October last year, the ECP had ruled against Imran Khan, declaring him ineligible from holding public office under Article 63(i)(p) in the Toshakhana reference. He was accused of selling gifts he received in his capacity as head of government from dignatries of other countries.

In the notice, the ECP mentioned its decision as well as that of the Supreme Court which states that an ineligible person cannot be the head of a political party.

In 2018, a three-member bench of the top court headed by the then-CJP, Justice Saqib Nisar, had ruled that an individual disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution cannot serve as head of a political party.

The notice has been sent to Imran Khan’s Banigala residence by the Islamabad district election commissioner .
