Elahi still Punjab CM amid threats of Governor Rule as PTI prepares for protest

A summary of political developments in the country

This is a summary of major political events happening in Pakistan and provides an answer to the general question of ‘what is going on in the country’ aka ho kia raha hy.

Several federal ministers, including Rana Sanaullah and Khurram Dastgir, threatened on Wednesday that the federal government could impose Governor Rule in Punjab since the chief minister, Pervaiz Elahi, has failed to take a vote of confidence from its assembly.

The governor, who represents the federation (currently the PML-N’s Baligur Rehman), had formally asked Elahi to convene a Punjab Assembly session to hold a vote of confidence. But Elahi’s PML-Q and his ally the PTI –- the two ruling parties –- ignored the instructions and no session was held by the 4pm deadline on Wednesday.

There was a debate on the possible repercussions for Elahi’s decision on Aaj News show Faisla Aap Ka Wednesday night.

The federal government is planning to deploy paramilitary Rangers and FC, a federal government controlled reserve police force, in the province to control the ‘law and order situation.’ This could be seen a a major interference in the province from the federation.

‍Zardari-Shehbaz discuss strategy

Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif spoke on the phone on Thursday to discuss the ongoing political situation in Punjab.

It is worth remembering that Zardari’s role was crucial in convincing Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to disown PML-Q’s moves to make Pervaiz Elahi the chief minister of Punjab.

The PML-N has also called a meeting of senior party leaders today (Thursday) to discuss where to go next.

PML-N advised not to de-notify CM

The PML-N’s meeting in the governor house failed to reach a definite agreement, but reports from inside suggested that legal experts within the party advised the leadership not to de-notify the CM.

The legal experts within the party are of the view that actions like de-notifying the CM will lead to Elahi getting relief from courts.

However, the moot did agree that the speaker’s ruling was unconstituional and the first step could be challenging it in the courts.

PTI confident of its numbers

The PTI, meanwhile, is preparing to hold a protest demonstration outside the Governor’s House in Lahore at around 5pm today (Thursday).

Fawad Chaudhry said that the party’s entire assembly strength is secure and will be able to vote for Pervaiz Elahi in the no-confidence vote.

The required number will be reached by ten members of the PML-Q and 177 members of the PTI, according to the Chaudhry.

“The constitutional crisis shows the fact the fresh elctions are the only solution,” he tweeted.
