Karachi police arrested on Friday a 16-year-old in connection with previous night’s murder in which a student the NED University of Engineering & Technology was shot dead.

Karachi Additional Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said that the prime suspect was arrested after being identified using CCTV footage. “Both suspects are Afghan nationals,” he said, adding that they were residents of a slum in the Sohrab Goth area on the outskirts of Karachi. UNHCR estimates suggest 1.5 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, with the majority living in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Karachi on the country’s southern tip.

The arrested suspect is 16 years old. Police said he shot the 21-year-old NED student for resisting during a robbery Thursday evening. Odho said the other suspect had also been identified and would be arrested soon. The murder weapon was seized from the suspect.

The student, identified as Bilal, was shot twice. One bullet struck him in the chest and the other in the leg. His brother Arsalan said that he was murdered for not handing over his cell phone to the robbers.

Bilal’s funeral prayers were offered on Friday near his residence in the Federal B Area area. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem attended the funeral.

Bilal’s fellow students held a protest against the murder and block a track of the University Road earlier today. They said incidence of street crime was on the rise in the vicinity while demanding the killers’ arrest.
