The Sindh government once again geared up to postpone local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad.

Sources privy to the matter said that the Sindh government will write a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking a delay in the local body elections.

They said that the provincial government was seeking the delay as the dates announced for the local government election in Karachi and the Pakistan-New Zealand cricket series were the same.

Last month the ECP announced that local government elections would take place on January 15, 2023, in Karachi and Hyderabad.

The LG polls in Karachi were first postponed in July due to the monsoon rains in the city.

The ECP deferred the local government elections multiple times due to the non-provision of security from the provincial government.

The elections were initially scheduled for July 24, but they were delayed due to “bad weather and rains”. Then, polling was set to take place on August 28 and October 24, but the provincial government refused to provide security.

In the latest move, sources said that according to the provincial government the police will be deployed at the security of the Pakistan-New Zealand ODI series which will make it difficult for the provincial government to deploy a sufficient number of police personnel at the polling stations.

The sources said that the Sindh government will request a change in the date of the match or that of the LG polls.
