Benazir Bhutto was not this ugly, mob says in Quetta

Enraged PPP supporters destroy ‘ugly’ Benazir Bhutto statue in Quetta

Benazir Bhutto’s physical beauty was legendary and acknowledged far and wide beyond the borders of Pakistan.

It should thus not come as a surprise that Pakistan Peoples Party workers were angered to see what can only be described as an unfortunate sculpture of her go up in Quetta’s Benazir Park.

Footage of them destroying it went viral on social media Wednesday, with activists saying that the statue did not resemble Benazir Bhutto.

The statue came under fire when its picture went viral on social media. On Twitter, users criticized its texture, calling it different from Benazir. It was installed on October 20, 2012.

PPP leader Sanaullah Jatak said, “We are sorry for the leader who sacrificed her life for the 22 crore people of Pakistan. The park was built, her statue is very ugly.”

He said that the statue did not reflect Benazir Bhutto in any way. It also raises questions on how weak the artists of Balochistan have become.

He appealed to the cantonment board and the administrator of Quetta to engage better artists.

Artist Ishaq Lehri went live on Facebook to comment on the situation. He said he was deeply saddened to see how artist Naseem Khan had been insulted.

“I admit that none of us are perfect. No artist is perfect. We can do substandard work,” he said. “We make mistakes. When you commission work in which you are being pressured to hurry up. A sword is hanging over your head. A lot of flaws need time to fix.”

Naseem Khan has been doing good work for a long time. “It makes me sad. He is an innocent artist. For these people to use such language. To insult them, I was personally saddened that an artist is treated like this.”
