KARACHI: A day after a woman made the puzzling claim that her infant daughter had been snatched - along with the bag in which she had kept the eleven-day-old child - in an incident of street crime in Karachi, it was revealed that the story was fictitious.

On Tuesday, the woman said that criminals snatched her bag while she was getting off a bus in Baldia Town, with the child inside the bag. The woman said that she had kept the child was sick which is why she had kept her inside the bag.

The news was widely reported in local mainstream media with the police resources deployed for the child’s recovery.

During the investigation, the police found that the woman had never given birth. She created the fictional child and the story of abduction to get the attention of her husband, who was living with his second wife.

Police sources told Aaj News that the woman had brought the child to the house for adoption. She kept the child for a few days and then handed it back to the real mother.

They said that she created the abduction story after handing the child back.

The police have recorded video statements of the woman and the infant’s mother.
