Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says Imran Khan’s recent diatribe against parliamentary democracy is proof that his politics is aimed at getting power even if it means undermining the foundations of the country.

“Imran’s recent diatribe against parliamentary democracy is the latest in a series of attacks that fly in the face of how democracy functions in modern nation-states,” the premier said in a tweet on Sunday.

The PTI chief on Friday had urged the coalition government to hold talks to decide a date for an early election to end an impasse that has stoked political instability.

“Either sit with us and talk as to when the next elections should be held or else we will dissolve the assemblies,” Khan had said.

Imran Khan, who was ousted as prime minister in April this year after a no-confidence motion was passed in the National Assembly, is seeking fresh general elections. However, the federal government led by PM Shehbaz Sharif is opposed to holding early elections in the country.

“Considering all this, I have decided that either this will happen that they sit with us or imagine that there will be an election in almost 66 per cent of Pakistan if we dissolve the assemblies [in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab],” the PTI chief said.
