Rana Sanaullah rejects Azam Swati’s custodial torture claim

PTI leader was in FIA custody throughout, not handed to anyone else, says interior minister

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah rejected on Friday PTI Senator Azam Swati’s accusation of custodial torture at the hands of a ISI operatives, saying that the claim had already been investigated with no evidence found to support the claim.

Swati, in a press conference earlier in the day, named two military who he said were responsible for torturing him. He said Major General Faisal and Sector Commander Fahim were the men responsible while calling for their removal from the post.

In public apperances this week, PTI chief Imran Khan’s referred to cops like the one in “Dirty Harry” - a Hollywood blockbuster starring Clint Eastwood as a cop who doesn’t mind running afoul of the law - being responsible for Swati’s custodial torture.

The interior minister, who was addressing a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID) Islamabad, rejected the claim, saying that both FIA and Cyber Crime Cirlce officials were questioned over Swati’s claims.

He said that Swati was arrested over his tweet on the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz, in which he named the army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“In the tweet, the court was ridiculed, other institutions were accused of interference,” said Sanaullah.

The FIA filed a valid case according to law, he said. “Azam Swati remained in the FIA custody, he continued. “Lies are being told continuously.”

He said that Swati underwent multiple physical checkups after his arrest, with none of the reports indicating torture.

An additional director of the FIA, who was accompanying the interior minister in the press conference, reiterated that Swati was not subjected to custodial torture or handed over to another agency. “Due process was followed in the arrest of Azam Swati.”
