Karachi mob beats two telecom workers to death over suspicion
KARACHI: A mob armed with bricks and stones beat two men to death in the Mauripur’s Machar Colony area of Karachi Friday.
Police said the two men were workers of a telecommunication compnay who had come to the area for maintenance work. They have been identified as Aiman Javed, the engineer, and Ishaq, the driver.
According to SSP Kemari Fida Hussain Janwari, someone spread the rumour that the men in the vehicle were there to kidnap children. The vehicle they were in had an Islamabad number plate.
As the rumour spread, area residents gathered at the scene where the engineer was working on a laptop to check signals, Janwari added.
He said that Police Constable Muhammad Imran, who was escorting a polio team nearby, heard the commotion and went to the scene.
The constable told Aaj News that he saw somewhere between 100-150 people beating the two telecom workers.
The policeman said his efforts to placate the mob resulted in a brick to the head.
He said that some other policemen who were at the scene had also been attacked.
