Legal expert Barrister Salahuddin Ahmed said Wednesday that the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone the local government elections may be viewed as contempt of court.

“ECP decision to postpone local government elections in Karachi once again (this time on pretext of security) is wrong. LG elections are long overdue. It violates the Constitution,” Salahuddin said on Twitter, adding that the decision would strengthen those who accuse the electoral body of being biased against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

His statement comes a day after the ECP decided the postponement of the Local Government elections that were scheduled to take place in Karachi on Sunday, October 23.

Following the ECP’s decision the PTI leaders strongly condemned its decision with PTI Secretary General Asad Umar claiming that the “imported government ran away again”. “How long will you run?” he questioned in a tweet.
