Pakistan fall agonisingly short against Egypt in Street Child World Cup final

Pakistan fell short of winning its first Street Child World Cup title, losing the final to Egypt on penalties.

After full time, the match was equally poised at 0-0. However, the Egyptians kept their nerves in the shootout, edging out Pakistan 4-3.

Earlier, Pakistan beat footballing giants Brazil on penalties to qualify for the final of the fourth edition of the Street Child World Cup taking place in Doha, Qatar.

Pakistan won 3-1 on penalties after the match ended in a stalemate.

They will now face Egypt in the final later today.

Various journalists and sport fans shared the screen recordings of the final penalty miss and celebration of Pakistani players after victory.

Earlier, Pakistan defeated former champions Tanzania 2-1 in the quarterfinals. For Pakistan, Tufail Shinwari and Muhammad Junaig bagged a goal each.

Pakistan had a fairytale run in the group stage as well, winning 2 out of its three matches to top the group with seven points.

The Street Child World Cup, first held in South Africa in 2010, now precedes the FIFA World Cup. It has taken place in the same country where the marquee football event is held.

In the first edition, boys and girls between teh ages of 14-16 comprised team members.

India were the inaugural winners after beating Tanzania in the final.

At the second edition, held in Brazil, separate teams competed for the boys and girls event.

Tanzania beat neighbours Burundi 3-1 in the boys final. Pakistan finished third after beating the US on penalties in the third-fourth place playoff.

Brazil won the girls edition that year.

The girls from Brazil retained their title at the Russia 2018, while boys from Uzbekistan took home the trophy.
