PM House Leaks: Imran knew cipher was transcript of a meeting, not letter

PTI chief emphasized no party leader was to name the United States

PTI Chief and then-Prime Minister Imran Khan was clearly told in March that the cipher he wanted to use to advance his political narrative was a transcript of a meeting and not a letter, a leaked audio clip indicates.

The leaked audio was recorded purportedly at a meeting between Imran Khan, PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar and then-principal secretary to the PM, Azam Khan.

The discussion appeared to revolve around a meeting between US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu and then-Pakistan Ambassador in Washington Asad Majeed.

In an audio clip leaked to social media on Friday, Azam Khan is heard saying that the letter was received on [March] 8-9. A voice in the background says it was received on the 8th.

“But the meeting was held on the 7th,” Imran Khan adds.

The PTI chief repeatedly emphasized that “we” will not name Americans.

He said he did not want anyone to name the origin of the letter.

At this, Asad Umar is heard saying, “Are you intentionally calling it a letter, because this is a transcript of a meeting, not a letter.”

“It is the same,” Imran Khan interrupts him. “The transcript of the meeting and letter is the same thing. You can’t call it transcript in public rallies because people would not understand,” Imran Khan says.

Aaj TV could not independently verify the authenticity and the date of the audio clip.

The new clip is apparently the second part of a recording that was released on Wednesday.

In the first part, Imran Khan was heard instructing Azam Khan to spin the issue of cipher and present it as evidence of a foreign conspiracy to remove him from power.

“We will only spin it (Hum ney sirf es par khelnaa hy). We won’t name the United States. Just spin it like the date was already there on it,” Imran Khan is heard in the first clip.

Soon after the first audio clip was aired by TV channels, Imran Khan appeared to confirm its authenticity when he was happy that Shehbaz Sharif regime had leaked the audio.

Both clips suggest that Azam Khan proposed that Shah Mahmood Qureshi will read out the cipher in a meeting in presence of the foreign secretary and give it a particular interpretation and then Azam Khan will record the minutes in a way that suited the government narrative.

Alleged hacker

The audio clips are apparently part of several conversations recorded at the Prime Minister House. Earlier, recordings of convrsation among PMLN leaders, including PM Shehbaz Sharif have surfaced.

A person claiming to be hacker offered at least three clips on a hackers’ forum in August, claiming that they were in possession of 8GB data containing over 100 conversations.

The alleged hacker demaned 180 BT (bitcoins) or $345,000 for exlusive access to the data.

However, the the original person who offered the data went silent on September 26, but another person using the same pseudonym announced from a different account that all the audios will be released on Friday, September 30.
