Have never talked about the extension of army chief’s tenure: Imran Khan

PTI chief clarifies he has never asked who should be the new army chief

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan Tuesday said that he never talked about the extension of the tenure of the army chief, adding that the appointment of the new army chief should be postponed until the election of a new government.

“I will give a final call for protest to the nation by September end,” the PTI chief said while talking to the journalists in Bani Gala.

The former premier said that he will give a “historic welcome” to the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif upon his return to Pakistan.

“I have never asked who should be the army chief,” the PTI chief clarified and stressed that the “appointment should be based on merit.”

Talking about the current government’s mandate to make the appointment, he said that “two families should never decide the name of the Army Chief,” a reference to the PML-N and PPP’s leadership.

Earlier on Monday, Imran Khan, during an interview with a private TV channel, conveyed a strong impression that the current army should be given an extension until the new government is elected.

The PTI chief questioned how a “fugitive” with 85 seats could have the power to select the army chief. The opponents could appoint a new army chief if they win the election and he would have no problem, he added.
