Lahore: An inquiry committe constituted to investigate the fire that broke out at the Children’s Hospital in Lahore earlier this month submitted its report to the Punjab chief minister on Tuesday. It has sought action against nine individuals that it says were responsible for the blaze.

The fire engulfed the pharmacy on third floor of the Children’s Hospital in Lahore on June 4. Medicines worth millions were destroyed in the fire, with the inquiry committee report stating that the losses were to the tune of Rs481 million.

The committee has recommended action against the nine individuals under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act for failing to take adequate action in response to the fire.

The fire broke out in a room adjacent to the pharmacy at around 5am due to a short circuit. The fire spread to the pharmacy through the central heating system installed in the out-patient department.

The inquiry committee recommended investigating the nine held responsible. They include two doctors.

Biomedical Engineer Shujaat Ali, Security Supervisor Boston, and pharmacists Insa Umair, Sumbal Noreen, Fatima Hafeez, Tahira Saman and Tahira Lateef were among those held responsible for the fire.

The report recommended that these employees aren’t given administrative post in the future, said one person who was privy to the contents of the report.

The recommendations of the inquiry committee and the report have been submitted to the Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, who will then decide if the PEEDA act will be applied in this case.
