Watch: The Kiswa of the Kaaba raised for Hajj
As per the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), the shroud (Kiswa) of the Kaabah has been raised three metres and the lower part of the Holy site has been covered with a white cloth so that the Kiswa does not tear and is not damaged during Hajj.
Dr Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the Imam of Kaaba and head of two holy shrines in Makkah and at least 50 experst from the Kiswa Factory took part in raising the Kiswa.
This is done every year to ensure that the Kiswa is not damaged as pilgrims circumambulate around the Kaaba.
The ritual of raising the Kiswa had not taken place for the last two years due to Covid-19.
The Kiswa is also replaced once a year during Hajj after the pilgrims go to Mount Arafat, in preparation for receiving worshippers the next morning, which coincides with Eid Al-Adha.
