ISLAMABAD: The federal government has withdrawn the last subsidy the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf had offered people on electricity bills.

The Power Division issued a notification Friday saying that the Rs5 per unit ease which was offered by the previous government on power bills had been withdrawn.

The government withdrew the subsidy on electricity bills only a day after phasing out the subsidy it had been providing on prices of petroleum products. The Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government had on Wednesday jacked up petrol prices by Rs24 per litre, the third increase in a month.

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said the government was not in a position to pay for subsidies any more. The current price of petrol stands at Rs209.86, diesel at Rs204.15, kerosene oil at Rs181.94 and light diesel at Rs178.31.
