Bradley Cooper speaks out about his drug addiction
Bradley Cooper, who rose to prominence as a significant cast member in Jennifer Garner’s iconic spy thriller series ‘Alias’, recently opened up about his cocaine addiction, claiming that he was “lost” and “addicted to cocaine.”
Being demoted to a guest star during the third season of the sitcom depressed him, he admitted on Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes’ Smartless podcast.
Arnett, Bradley’s longtime friend, believed that addressing his addiction was a necessary’ metamorphosis’ before establishing his career with The Hangover in 2004.
He recalled that he stopped by Cooper’s place, noticing that it was late afternoon and he still hadn’t let his dogs out to go to the bathroom.
“That was the first time I ever realised I had a problem with drugs and alcohol,” said Cooper. “It was Will saying that to me, I’ll never forget it… It changed my entire life.”
“I definitely made major breakthroughs 29 to 32, 33, 34 where I was at least able to stand in front of someone and breathe and listen and talk,” he reflected. “Will is the reason, he took that risk of having that hard conversation with me in July of 2004, that put me on a path of deciding to change my life.”
“I was doing these movies, and I got to meet Sandra Bullock and meet these people and work with them,” he added at the time. “And I’m sober, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m actually myself. And I don’t have to put on this air to be somebody else.”
Arnett said he has noticed a “difference” in Cooper, adding, “It has been awesome seeing you in this place and seeing you comfortable. Nothing has made me happier.”
Getting emotional, Arnett said, “It’s made me happy to see you so happy with who you are.”
Cooper has received Oscar nominations for his performance and acclaim for his work as a director on his debut picture, A Star Is Born, since his battle with addiction.
His Clint Eastwood–directed war film American Sniper was a critical and commercial success, and Cooper is set to direct again for his upcoming Netflix biopic of Leonard Bernstein, in which he also stars as the famous conductor and composer.
