Kandhkot: Police arrested Zohaib Qureshi, the main accused in the Dua Mangi kidnapping case, on Tuesday after an exchange of fire.

The police tried to stop a car during a routine snap check on the Indus Highway but instead of stopping, the occupant of the car fired from inside in a bid to escape.

The man was injured by the police’s retaliatory action. When the police subdued the attacker, they found it was Qureshi. He was arrested on the spot.

In January this year, the prime suspect escaped from police custody in Karachi while he was being taken back to jail from the courthouse. Two policemen were arrested while Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also suspended Courts SSP Azam Durrani.

The car, six mobile phones and five wifi devices were also confiscated from the accused.

The police were praised for their bravery and for arresting Qureshi, said SSP Amjad Sheikh. “I salute the police, and will recommend they are rewarded for their sheer bravery.”

According to the first information report (FIR), which was registered in the Ferozabad Police Station, Zohaib Ali Qureshi s/o Mumtaz Ali Qureshi, one of the accused in the 2019 kidnappings, was presented before the Civil and Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday. The court had fixed February 9, 2022, as the next date of hearing.
