PC Hotel corridor false ceiling caves in, 2 killed

Karachi: A false ceiling in Pearl Continental Hotel Karachi collapsed midnight on Thursday, in which two men were killed and two women were injured.

The victims were identified as Rais Ahmad and Shah Faraz.

The hotel management immediately posted a message. “Pearl Continental Hotel Karachi wishes to extend its sincere condolences, thoughts and support to all those impacted by today’s incident that happened due to a portion of false ceiling that came off the roof in one of the corridors. Hotel staff has been diligently providing assistance to our guests,” the hotel posted on Facebook.

“We are currently investigating the cause of the unfortunate incident and working with the emergency services . Local administration and all concerned authorities have inspected and cleared the site .Our thoughts are with everyone that have been affected, and we are in communication with them.”

Ambulances rushed to the scene. Staff was scene helping remove victims on a stretcher.

PC Hotel in Karachi is an old building that was opened in 1964 as Intercontinental Continental Hotel by President Muhammad Ayub Khan. The international chain was operated by PİA through Pakistan Services Limited. It was acquired by the Hashoo Group in 1985.

Pearl Continental was designed by American architect William B Tabler. It originally had 306 air-conditioned guestrooms with balconies. The interior was designed by Dale and Pat Keller as commissioned by Neal Prince, who was known as a set designer.
