The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has said it is ready for immediate elections, with party convenor Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui telling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that the issue of electoral reforms can be completed within a week.

MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, the PM Office said in a statement.

The party was part of the PTI-led government but decided to switch sides before the no-confidence vote that led to Imran Khan’s removal as prime minister.

During the meeting, the MQM-P leader advised the premier for legislation on the tenure of an army chief and the conditions under which extension is granted.

The MQM leader paid tribute to PM Sharif for prioritizing the projects of public welfare and for his directives for the immediate implementation of development projects relating to the people of Karachi.

The premier welcomed the cooperation of the allied parties in the implementation of government reforms and termed the cooperation of the allies as key in future decisions in the national interest.

Siddiqui said that his party was in favor of immediate elections in the country, adding that the electoral reforms can be carried out within a week.

The MQM-P convener also defended the appointment of Nasreen Jaleel as the governor of Sindh.

The MQM while putting forward its proposals to PM Shehbaz, opposed the hike in prices of petroleum products.

The prime minister decided to summon a meeting of coalition partners tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the ongoing political situation.

According to the sources, parliamentary leaders of PPP, BNP, MQM-P and JUI-F are expected to attend the meeting.
