The Single National Curriculum has been the most debated programme launched by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government. However, the change of government has put a question mark over its future.

The Ministry of Education has agreed to call a national conference to examine the Single National Curriculum of the former government and get to a consensus over it.

The Single National Curriculum was proposed and implemented to some extent last year from grades one to five in the schools of Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sindh had reservations over the decision.

It was also planned that the Single National Curriculum would be brought into use from the upcoming academic session that starts in August, for grades six, seven and eight.

The newly formed government seems to continue this policy, albeit with some adjustments. Both ministers from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz received briefings from the ministry and National Curriculum Council officials.

According to sources, it was also decided that the entire educational system should be changed from being based on rote learning to a setup where critical thinking skills are encouraged in students.

Moreover, plans are also under way for a facility to train teachers.
