PTI’s Sardar Ilyas elected unpposed as AJK PM amid opposition boycott
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Sardar Tanveez Ilyas has been elected unopposed as the 14th prime minister of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in a session boycotted by the combined opposition.
The election took place days after PTI’s Abdul Qayyum Niazi resigned from the role following a no-confidence motion filed against him by his party members.
The session, presided over by Speaker Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, was convened by AJK President Barrister Sultan Mahmood.
In the session, Ilyas was elected unopposed after the 19-member combined opposition opted to boycot the election.
The opposition had nominated PPP regional president Chaudhry Mohammad Yasin as their candidate for the slot but announced on Sunday that it it was pulling out of the contest.
On Saturday, the AJK Supreme Court had ordered the issuance of a new schedule for the election of the new prime minister through the summoning of a fresh session of the AJK Legislative Assembly by the president.
