The funeral prayers of Bilquis Bano Edhi, the wife of renowned humanitarian and philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, were offered on the MA Jinnah Road in Karachi. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also attended the funeral.

Bilquis Edhi passed away at the age of 74 on Friday after a brief hospitalisation. She was admitted after her blood pressure dropped but as per the Edhi Foundation spokesperson, Bilquis was ill for the last one month. She had also undergone a bypass after developing a heart condition.

Bilquis Bano Edhi was born in Bantva, India on 14th August 1947. She eventually joined the Edhi foundation as a nurse in 1965, where she caught Abdul Sattar Edhi's eye because of her dedication and hard work.

She eventually went on to head the Bilquis Edhi Foundation which went on to save at least 42,000 unwanted babies by placing “jhoolas” [cradles] at Edhi Homes and centres across the country.

Last year, Bilquis was declared the ‘Person of the Decade’, along with the human rights rapporteur of the UN, Professor Yanghee Lee and the US ethicist Stephen Soldz.

A spokesperson for the Edhi Foundation told APP that as per the domino effect verdict, announced on Friday by the Impact Hallmarks, Bilquis Edhi was declared the most impactful person of the first two decades of the 21st century.

Bilquis was one of the most active humanitarians in the country and co-chaired the Edhi Foundation with her son Faisal after her husband’s passing in 2016.
