A man in New York was arrested for the attempted murder of 67-year-old woman of Asian descent after he was seen punching her at least 125 times on CCTV footage, reported NPR.

He also stomped on her with his foot at least seven times before spitting on her.

According to the Yonkers Police Department, the victim was returning to her apartment on March 11, when she walked past the suspect, 42 year-old, Tammel Esco,

According to a police news release, Esco called the victim an "Asian b****" when she crossed him.

Surveillance footage shows that the victim ignores him and enters the vestibule of her apartment building. While she is opening the second door that Esco allegedly approached her from behind and started punching her.

He punched her head and face at least 125 times, eventually knocking her over. He then stomped on her repeatedly and left after spitting on her.

The woman is stable but suffered multiple injuries as well lacerations to her head and face.

When Yonkers police initially got to the scene, Esco was outside the apartment building. He was later arrested.

He is charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of assault as a hate crime.

Esco will appear in court on March 25.

There has been an alarming increase in hate towards women of Asian descent in the US.

Meanwhile an organisation, Stop AAPI Hate, that tracks incidents of discrimination against Asian Americans found that most cases reported from March 2020 to March 2021 targeted women.

While from March 2020 to December 2021, at least 11,000 hate incidents against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were reported to the organisation.
