Russia fines Google $98 mn over banned content: court
Moscow court slaps Google with a hefty fine for failing to remove illegal content
MOSCOW: A Moscow court slapped Google with a hefty fine on Friday for failing to remove illegal content as Russian authorities pile pressure on foreign tech giants.
The US firm was fined 7.2 billion rubles, ($98 million, 86 million euros), the court's press service said on Telegram.
Moscow has increased pressure on Big Tech this year in a campaign that critics characterise as an attempt by the Russian authorities to exert tighter control over the internet, something they say threatens to stifle individual and corporate freedom.
