The Supreme Court on Monday granted post-arrest bail to mother of Zahir Jaffer — a key suspect in Noor Mukadam murder case, while it disposed of the plea of prime accused's father.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprised of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin conducted hearing of the case.

The apex court ordered Asmat Adamjee to submit bail bonds of Rs1 million.

Advocate Khwaja Harris, the petitioners' lawyer, argued the parents of Zahir were not prime suspects in the case as they were being accused of concealing the murder as well as not informing the police.

The accused statement and call records are evidences regarding the hiding of the murder, said Harris, adding the prime suspect remained in contact with his parents from 6:45pm to 9pm. However, there are no evidences that Zahir had talked to father.

Justice Amin remarked the court could not give its opinion in the case of bail plea as it could end the case of prosecution.

Justice Shah remarked it was possible that the accused father was instructing Zahir to murder Noor or prohibiting his son to do so.

On which Advocate Harris responded that it was also possible that Zahir was not telling truth to his father.

During the proceedings of the case Justic Shah inquired whether a test would be conducted to asses mental health of the accused.

The defendant's lawyer Shah Khawar said no test of Zahir was conducted to assess his mental health, while his drug test had been conducted.

Justice Amin remarked the question of mental stability only arose when an accused accepted the crime. Otherwise mental condition of the suspect was not considered, he added.

The court adjourned the proceedings of the case till October 18 and asked the prosecution to present evidences to the extent of Asmat and Zahir in the next hearing.

Zahir's parents approached the SC against the decision of the Islamabad High Court which had dismissed their bail pleas. The IHC also ordered to conclude the trial of the case in eight weeks.
