Prime Minister Imran Khan has invited Afghanistan's former president Hamid Karzai to a special conference, according to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

He tweeted that the prime minister had extended the invitation during a phone call on Wednesday.

He described the call as an important development and one that would help find a solution to the country's problems. He said details of the conference would be revealed soon.

He also said other leaders had been invited but did not disclose names.

Pakistan has expressed concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan in the past weeks, especially after the US withdrew its troops after decades long war.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has spoken of concerns of an influx of refugees fleeing Afghanistan, saying Pakistan was not ready to deal with this situation.

On Wednesday the Pakistan government sealed the border at Chaman after reports of the Taliban seizing Spin Boldak crossing. The Afghan government denied these reports.
