This year has been dominated by the novel coronavirus and its dreadful impact on billions of lives across the globe. Countries have been fighting tooth and nail with the viral infection for almost a year now. To date, over 65 million cases have been confirmed worldwide.

Yesterday, the world saw the biggest one-day spikes both in newly reported COVID-19 cases and death tallies.

In the past 24 hours, 679,375 new cases were reported and 12,684 people succumbed to the viral disease.

According to the coronavirus statistics provided by the website "Worldometer", the latest global situation is as follows:

 New Cases (Last 24 hours): 679,375

 Total Deaths: 1,511,106   

 New Deaths (Last 24 hours): 12,684   

 Total Recovered: 45,364,418  

 Active Cases: 18,641,668  

 Critical Cases: 106,581   

The flu bug is still rampant in several parts of the globe which is evident in the rising numbers. But the good news is that the coronavirus vaccines are no longer a distant dream as at least 3 different vaccines have shown superb results. Earlier this week, the UK became the first western country to formally authorize the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
