According to the latest estimates of the World Health Organization, only 10% of the world's population has gotten infected with novel coronavirus to date.

This was revealed by Michael J. Ryan who is the executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme and is leading the team responsible for the international containment and treatment of COVID-19 during his address to the agency’s Executive Board.

This Monday, Dr. Ryan warned that this means that the majority of the world remains vulnerable to Covid-19 and that we're about to head into a 'difficult period' of the pandemic, as cases spread rapidly across the world. He said:

Our current best estimates tell us about 10% of the global population may have been infected by this virus. It varies depending on the country, it varies from urban to rural, it varies depending on groups. But what it does mean is that the vast majority of the world remains at risk.

WHO's top emergency expert further added:

We are now heading into a difficult period. The disease continues to spread.

Dr. Mike Ryan also noted that Southeast Asia continues to see a surge in cases, while Europe and Eastern Mediterranean regions were seeing a spike in cases and deaths. But he dubbed the coronavirus situation in Africa and the Western Pacific as "rather more positive."

The global coronavirus cases have exceeded 36 million, also the number of deaths due to the viral disease has exceeded well over 1 million mark. The devastation caused by the flu bug is unprecedented in recent times. The most worrying thing about the pandemic situation is that several countries which had contained coronavirus successfully are reporting a severe second wave of the virus. These include Spain, France, United Kingdom, and others.
