The global death count of COVID-19 crossed the 1 million mark today.

The lethal disease caused by novel coronavirus has been wreaking havoc all over the world for the past several months. According to the live coronavirus statistics provided by the Worldometer, the total number of coronavirus cases across the world has exceeded 33 million. One million of these infected people have been reported to succumb to the viral disease.

The United States leads the world in COVID-19 fatalities as well as the total number of cases reported. With India second in the number of reported cases and Brazil second in terms of coronavirus fatalities.

Country   Total Cases   Total Deaths

1) USA     7,319,274 209,438

2) India   6,073,348 95,574

3) Brazil  4,732,309    141,741

The latest COVID-19 mortality analyses done by Johns Hopkins University tells us that Mexico (10.5%) has the highest observed case-fatality ratio among all nations. The observed CFR figures measure the number of deaths per 100 confirmed cases, France and Iran are respectively second and third on the scale with both 5.7% observed CFR.

Another Johns Hopkins figure, which calculates deaths per 100,000 population, which represents a country’s general population factoring in both confirmed cases and healthy people is analyzed in the report. For this statistic, the country with the highest rate, according to the researchers, is Peru, which has 98.06 deaths per 100,000.

The devastation caused by COVID-19 is unparalleled. The worse part is that the pandemic is showing no signs of slowing down. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the global death toll from COVID-19 could more than double to two million before a successful vaccine is widely used – and could be even higher without a concerted effort by the global community to thwart the pandemic.
