Global coronavirus death toll soars to 196,000, over 2.8 million infected

The global death toll from the novel coronavirus climbed over 196,000 on Saturday.

More than 2.8 million declared cases have been registered in 210 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 778,000 are now considered recovered.

In United States, nearly 925,038 cases were confirmed, including more than 52,185 deaths. The US reported an increase of 1,900 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 25,900 fatalities, with 420 people succumbing to the disease in last 24 hours.

Spain has recorded 22,500 fatalities with 367 in a single day and 219,764 infections.

China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 4,632 deaths and 82,816 cases, with 77,346 recoveries.

France has reported 389 deaths in a single day, taking the tally to 22,245 deaths and 159,828 cases.

United Kingdom has reported 768 deaths during last 24 hours, 19,500 fatalities and 143,464 infections.

Meanwhile, the death toll is 5,574 in Iran as confirmed number of cases is almost 88,194.

Many countries have restricted flights from the most affected places and implemented lockdowns as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a pandemic and Europe the new epicenter of the outbreak.
