Global Coronavirus death tally surpasses 165,000

Confirmed COVID-19 cases have exceeded 2.4 million globally, with the death toll surpassing 160,000.

In the United States, nearly 764,265 cases were confirmed, including more than 40,565 deaths. For the second straight day the virus killed at least 1,867 in a 24-hour period.

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 23,660 fatalities, with 482 people succumbing to the disease in last 24 hours.

Spain- registered a sharp drop in the daily death toll from coronavirus, falling to 410 from 565. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he will ask Parliament to extend the lockdown until May 9.

China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 4,632 deaths and 82,747 cases, with 77,084 recoveries.

France has reported 642 deaths in a single day, taking the tally to 19,718 deaths and 152,894 cases.

United Kingdom has reported 888 deaths during last 24 hours, 16,060 fatalities and 120,067 infections.
