Musharraf files petition in LHC challenging special court's verdict
Former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf on Friday filed a petition in the Lahore High Court challenging the special court’s verdict sentencing him to death in a high treason case.
The petition filed by Azhar Siddique on behalf of Musharraf in the High Court stated that Musharraf was not given a chance to present his arguments and that the “special court quite abruptly and hurriedly wrapped up a trial that was far from its conclusion.
The special court on December 17 had sentenced the former military ruler to death for imposing a state of emergency on November 3, 2007.
A three member bench of the special court, headed by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth, took up the high treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf and handed him the death sentence.
“Pervez Musharraf has been found guilty of Article 6 for violation of the constitution of Pakistan,” government law officer Salman Nadeem said.
He was indicted on March 31, 2014. However, due to continuous appeals the trial of the former military dictator lingered on and he left Pakistan in March 2016.
