Five strange custom of Nigeria
Some Nigerian culture you probably haven't heard about, it might be weird traditions but it surely exist in Nigeria.
Every tribe and nation are bound by certain cultural practices and traditions and Nigeria is not an exception. Every States in Nigeria as it own certain culture, some are sometimes uncool but totally normal and acceptable in the place where they are been practiced.
WITCH HUNTING:
Witch-hunt or witch purge is a search for people labelled "witches" or evidence of witchcraft, often involving moral panic or mass hysteria.
This practice happens more among the edos (Edo state). A woman who is called witch while a man is called wizard. When a man or woman are being suspected for witchcraft due to some evil occurrence happening in the community, they would be taken to a witch doctor who will torture them till they confess.
Female circumcision:
Female genital mutilation, also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia.
Unlike the male circumcision which involves complete removal of the foreskin around the genitals, the female circumcision involves total removal of the genitals and it been done because of chastity. Thanks to modernization the process as been reduced and it not that rampant anymore. This process happens mostly among the northerners.
THE FATTENING ROOM:
The fattening room is an ancient practice in calabar which gradually going extinct. The fattening room is a place young women are prepared for womanhood. In ancient times, fat was viewed as a sign of prosperity, fertility and beauty. Young girls are usually taken to the fattening room during puberty.
MAGUN:
Magun is a charm that originates from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. It literally means "do not climb."
Mostly everyone as no tolerance for adultery, it was stated in the bible that adultery is a big sin. Magun (thunderbolt) is used by been placed on a woman unaware by her husband in other to catch her in the act. Although it as different side effects, some might end up losing their life while will be given some concussions after it as taken it effect efficiently
WIDOWHOOD:
A widow is a woman whose spouse has died, while a widower is a man whose spouse has died. The state of having lost one's spouse to death is termed widowhood. This is common amongst the Igbos. A widow is subjected to humiliation to prove she has no hand in her husband’s death. All kinds of punishments are inflicted on her such as making her drink the water used in washing her husband’s corpse, shaving off her hair and the likes.
