Noor Jahan's birth anniversary observed today
WEB DESK: 90TH birth anniversary of legendary singer and actress Madam Noor Jehan is being observed on Wednesday (21 September).
Noor Jehan's, was born Allah Rakhi Wasai on September 21‚ 1926 into a family of musicians in Kasur‚ Punjab.
She contributed towards the South Asian film industry with her remarkable songs, which to date are popular among the Pakistani and Indian disapora. She worked in many Pakistani films whereas she also sang songs for several Bollywood films including Naadaan, Naukar, Lal Haveli and Dil. She sang more than 10,000 songs for more than thousand films.
Madam ruled the film industry for more than 35 years and sung appropriately six thousand songs for Urdu‚ Punjabi and Sindhi films. Not only was she a celebrated playback singer but also a gifted ghazal singer. She was awarded the Pakistan President’s Awards in 1965 for her acting and singing capabilities especially for a patriotic song she sang during the 1965 India-Pakistan war.
She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum (the queen of melody) in Pakistan.
On December 23‚ 2000‚ Noor Jahan died as a result of heart failure and was buried in Karachi. She was a reflection of true musical magnificence, a legend that will live forever.
