WEB DESK: Garlic is one of the most beneficial vegetables one can take, i.e. it fights against common cold and flu, and is also great for cutting excess fat.

However, despite its numerous benefits it carries a notorious reputation for leaving behind an awful breath, why is it that? New York Post reports that when you consume a garlic clove, it releases an enzyme called allyl methyl sulfide, which is the source behind the garlic’s aroma and its ‘garlic breath effect,’ which can last up to 24 hours.

Now why does it last so long, Metro explains, the way allyl methyl sulfide is absorbed by the body is the reason behind why it lasts for so long. Studies have revealed that the gas absorbs into the blood and gets transferred to the lungs, where it gets exhaled. The gas can also be passed through the pores of the skin, which might explain the lingering garlic smell.

However, not to worry as one should consume lemon juice, which neutralizes the odor-causing enzymes, to get rid of the smell.
