With the ever dynamic world, our office culture has also changed from a standard workplace to a venue for celebrating important events i.e. colleagues' birthdays, engagements or just having a good time.

These celebrations come with consumption of cakes and sweets popularly known as the ‘cake culture’, however, it has unfortunately become a major health concern, says dental experts.

According to The Week, this ever growing trend is adding to obesity and dental problems, says Prof Nigel Hunt, from the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

Hunt was concerned over the rising consumption of sugary treats such as cakes, sweets and biscuits among adults which is contributing to tooth decay in adults.

“Managers want to reward staff for their efforts, colleagues want to celebrate special occasions, and workers want to bring back a gift from their holidays. But for many people the workplace is now the primary site of their sugar intake and is contributing to the current obesity epidemic and poor oral health,” he said.

"I'm not saying we need to ban such treats," he said. "But we do need a change in culture," indicating that we should be more careful with what we eat.

“When people are going out to the shops and buying cake and sweets they should at least consider buying smaller quantities and making them available only with lunch meals,” he said, as reported Huffington Post.
