Partly Facetious: The criticality of flow

Photo: Telegraph Photo: Telegraph

"The problem is in not understanding the difference between the stock and the flow, and need I add flow is a very critical component in all disciplines."

"I was never one for terminology so you have lost me."

"The Senate panel on human rights has called for the dissolution of the Council for Islamic Ideology (CII) and contended that their rulings are responsible for the increase in violence against women."

"So where does the difference between stock and flow come in?"

"See the CII has been focused on the stock or rulings of times past. But the early days of Islam were marked by a significant strengthening of women's rights and need I add during the life of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) the flow or in this case more and more rights were granted to women."

"OK?"

"Two things: first the bar on women's rights was extremely low during the lifetime of our Prophet (peace be upon him), if not almost invisible, a bar that has increased with time and I define the bar as the stock and the increase as the flow. And second if we stop all flows and rely exclusively on the stocks then we may be violating the spirit of what our Prophet (peace be upon him) began."

"Oh, besides Farhatullah Babar pointed out that the CII submitted its final report in 1997 and given the Constitution Article 230 (4) which stipulates that the Islamic Council shall submit its final report within seven years - and this was in the 1973 constitution - Babar contends that it should cease to exist."

"Hmmm, so instead of submitting the final report in 7 years as required by the constitution they took 23 years?"

"Hey, welcome to Pakistan. So why didn't the CII dissolve itself, I mean..."

"They have an office on Constitution Avenue and isn't it all about location, location, location..."

"Don't be facetious - granted that all Pakistanis love to engage in real estate yet the CII is not a real estate agency."

"They also get paid at the tax payers' expense and there is media coverage and...."

"Hmmm, you are right - with these factors who would adhere to the constitution!"
