Train bomb kills 3 in Pakistan: officials

MULTAN, Pakistan- A bomb blast in a passenger train killed at least three people and wounded 20 others on Friday in central Pakistan, officials said.

The bombing took place in the central town of Rajanpur, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Multan in Punjab province.

"At least three people were killed and 20 others were wounded when a bomb exploded in one of the compartments of (the) Khushhal Khan Khattak express," senior police official Zahid Mehmood Gondal told AFP.

Eight train wagons fell from the track which was going from the troubled northwestern city of Peshawar to Karachi, he added.

Railways police official Raja Zaheer Arshad also confirmed the blast and casualties.

Nobody immediately claimed the responsibility for the bombing, he added.

Since July 2007, Pakistan has been gripped by a local Taliban-led insurgency, concentrated largely in the northwest.

The government says more than 40,000 people have been killed in violence since 2001, when Pakistan allied itself with the US-led "war on terror".
