NEW DELHI: Party president Sonia Gandhi told India's ruling Congress Thursday not to name her son Rahul as its candidate for prime minister in a looming general election, a spokesman said.

"She said: 'This is not the party's tradition (to announce its candidate before the elections). Just because some party has declared the PM candidate, does not mean that Congress will do the same'," Congress spokesman Janardan Dwivedi said after a meeting of senior party figures.
